Fisher & Paykel Appliances: History & Reviews

Fisher & Paykel Specials

The dream of two friends, Woolf Fisher and Maurice Paykel became a reality in 1934 when the pair managed to sell a few surplus refrigerators imported into New Zealand by Paykel Brothers, Maurice's family business. Family members began investing capital in the Woolf and Maurice's small business venture and they opened their first showroom and office in Auckland in Queen's Arcade. Appliance retailing was still in its infancy, so the small company decided to supplement their income by selling other products like toasters, vacuum cleaners, irons and record players. In 1938 the New Zealand government put import restrictions on certain products and that act prompted the company to negotiate a license to manufacture Kelvinator washing machines in New Zealand. When war was declared in 1939 the company was declared an essential industry and was protected, so raw materials and staffing needs were never an issue.

Exporting became the company's main focus in the late 1960s. Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia began to market and sell Fisher & Paykel products and by 1971 the export income was $2.4 million. Fisher & Paykel became a publically traded company in 1975. In 1985 the first electronic washing machine was introduced and new automated products like wall ovens, freezers and dishwashers were constantly being updated and improved. The company went through another transition in 1998 when the Healthcare division was separated from the Appliance division. When the split was complete in 1999, the company reorganised and ended their 30 year relationship with Matsushita, so the firm could focus on business units instead of the divisionalised structure of previous years. Fisher & Paykel became two separately listed companies in 2001; Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corporation LTD. and Fisher & Paykel Appliance Holdings LTD.
